2023 Australian Mental Health Prize Awarded to Geoff Toogood

Congratulations to our founder Dr Geoffrey Toogood who has been awarded the 2023 Australian Mental Health Prize for a doctor with lived experience. This is a fantastic recognition for Geoff, for all his efforts in creating the Crazysocks4docs movement, which is now a global phenomenon. Congratulations Geoff!

Dr. Geoffrey Toogood, a highly regarded consultant cardiologist, is not just a distinguished medical expert but an impassioned advocate for mental health awareness. Triumphing over significant periods of mental illness, Geoffrey emerged with an unwavering mission: to destigmatise mental health discourse within the medical realm and spotlight the challenges faced by healthcare professionals. Rooted in his own experiences, Geoffrey established the Crazy Socks 4 Docs movement (crazysocks4docs.com.au) – a resounding campaign aimed at normalising mental health conversations among healthcare practitioners. The movement’s cornerstone, Crazysocks4docs Day, observed every first Friday of June, has ignited global recognition and participation. From his personal recovery journey to his role as a Beyond Blue ambassador, founding his own charity, conquering competitive swimming challenges, including the English Channel and Gibraltar Strait. Geoffrey’s dedication in dismantling mental health stigmas, especially among healthcare professionals, is a resounding testament to his unyielding commitment towards nurturing awareness, fostering support and catalysing impactful change.”

Crazysocks4docs Supports Doctors’ Health Program

CrazySocks4Docs is supporting the Doctors’ Health SA’s unique “doctor-for-doctors” training program, which equips participating GPs to deal specifically with doctors’ health. This financial support follows the successful Crazysocks4docs breakfast event held by Doctors’ Health SA in 2021.

Dr Geoff Toogood, Founder of CrazySocks4Docs, says he was delighted with the support from the medical profession in South Australia. “This is what we aim for with the CrazySocks day, to see doctors coming together to reduce the stigma about mental health,” Dr Toogood said.
“With our new Foundation for doctors’ mental health we want to support tangible positive outcomes for doctors’ wellbeing,” Dr Toogood said. “To do that we are partnering with Doctors’ Health SA to expand their long-term successful and proven doctors-for-doctors training program to all doctors across Australia.”
